Wee Rays, a special needs centre founded in 2022 with a purpose far deeper than education or therapy. It was born from lived experience, compassion, and a promise to families seeking a safe, loving place for their neurodiverse children. Its founder, director, and Head Child Psychologist, Ms. Roshanak Zarei, speaks with a conviction that immediately reveals the soul of Wee Rays. As she shared, “I knew Malaysia needed a place that gives comfort to parents, love the children and makes everyone feel like one big family. My mission is to provide that.”
Today, Wee Rays stands proudly as a one-stop centre for special needs services, embracing neurodevelopmental, emotional, behavioural and psychological support for children and adolescents. It is a centre built with skills and heart.
A Mission Strengthened by Responsibility & Love
It began as a personal calling. Ms. Roshanak’s journey into special needs care started when a close family member was diagnosed with autism. Throughout her years of working in Germany and over a decade of hands-on experience, she noticed gaps: centres that looked polished but lacked warmth…facilities that were certified but emotionally disconnected.
At Wee Rays, she vowed to build something different. “The most important ingredient is love,” she explained. “You can have licenses and luxurious spaces, but without love and genuine connection, something essential is missing.”
Thus, Wee Rays was created to be:
- A home-like sanctuary for children
- A trustworthy and compassionate partner for parents
- A place where professionals collaborate like family
This emotional ecosystem is the foundation of their mission, to help every child flourish as an independent, confident individual.
What Makes Wee Rays Truly Unique
1. Genuine One-Stop Special Needs Centre
Wee Rays goes beyond typical early intervention. Their services cover a wide spectrum of needs, including:
- Neurodevelopmental conditions (Autism, ADHD, developmental delays)
- Emotional and behavioural issues (anxiety, depression, impulse control)
- Coaching programmes for teens
- Parent management programmes
- Early intervention programmes (EIP)
- Individual and group assessments
Ms. Roshanak describes it perfectly: “We cover all children, whether their challenges are emotional, neurodevelopmental, or physical. It’s truly a one-stop place.”
2. Programmes That Grow With Your Child
Wee Rays welcomes children as young as 6 months for assessments, and begins intervention from around 1 to 1.5 years old, depending on need. Their programmes cater up to 17 years old, especially for adolescents facing anxiety, emotional challenges, or social difficulties. This versatility allows families to receive complete, coordinated care under one roof, without bouncing between multiple centres or practitioners.
3. No “Classroom Mindset” – Only Individualised, Heart-Centred Care
One of Wee Rays’ most defining philosophies is its rejection of rigid, classroom-style learning for neurodiverse children. Ms. Roshanak believes strongly that such environments ignore crucial differences in pace, sensory tolerance, and emotional needs. Each child receives:
- Individualised education plans
- Skill-based sessions
- A maximum therapist-to-child ratio of 1:2 or 1:3
- Immersive learning through play, structured or free
- Exposure to social interaction without the overwhelm

4. Purposefully Designed Spaces
The place is planned with empathy and every corner is intentional, soothing and child-friendly:
- A therapy room
- A cosy OT room optimised for sensory needs
- A lounge with swings and slides
- A calming room exclusively for children with emotional or behavioural needs

5. Transformational Outcomes
Wee Rays has helped nonverbal children begin speaking, guided anxious teens to emotional stability, and prepared many students to successfully transition into mainstream schools. The strongest testament? Children themselves request to come, even crying on weekdays because they can’t wait for their next session.
6. Support for Parents: A Place Where Feelings Are Heard
At Wee Rays, support extends far beyond therapy sessions. Ms. Roshanak’s door is always open, literally. Parents often step in for comfort, guidance, or simply someone to listen after a long, heavy week. Some laugh, some cry, and many finally feel safe enough to share their fears and worries.
Through parent coaching programmes, behavioural strategies, emotional support, and honest conversations, Wee Rays helps parents regain confidence and clarity. For many, the centre becomes not just a treatment facility, but an emotional anchor.
The Heartbeat of Wee Rays: A Team That Loves Like Family
Wee Rays core is undoubtedly its team. They hire therapists not merely for their qualifications, but for their warmth, responsibility, passion, and what Ms. Roshanak lovingly calls “the sparkle in their eyes when they talk to children.” The team functions like a true family, supporting one another, stepping in during difficult moments, and sharing both victories and challenges. This closeness naturally extends to the children, many of whom eagerly look forward to their sessions and even ask for Wee Rays at home. This heartfelt eagerness is the clearest sign that the centre is doing something right.
Ongoing training strengthens this bond further. Every three months, therapists dive into the latest research, refine intervention techniques, and participate in personal development sessions led by the founder herself. Her goal is not only to train capable therapists, but to shape grounded, compassionate individuals who can make a meaningful impact in every child’s life.
Understanding Malaysia’s Special Needs Landscape: Challenges and Concerns
Ms. Roshanak speaks openly about the challenges many Malaysian families face today. Denial is still common, parents may insist on mainstream schooling before their child is ready, often leading to regression, anxiety, or behavioural outbursts. Most mainstream teachers are not trained to handle neurodiverse needs, resulting in children being misunderstood or left alone.
Another rising trend is the rapid increase of new therapy centres. While growth is not inherently bad, she worries about centres becoming overly business-oriented. “It’s good for businesses to thrive, but if the booming business trend starts deducting the quality of services, then there is a problem. Working with special needs children is delicate. You need passion, not just profit.”
She also highlights the financial strain on families, as therapy is resource-heavy and often not covered by insurance, leaving many parents feeling helpless.
Looking Ahead: Expanding the Rays of Hope
Dreams for Wee Rays are big and bold, with plans to open new branches in Penang, Johor, and other Malaysian states and eventually bring Wee Rays to the European Union. This is driven by a simple, heartfelt mission to reach more children who deserve high-quality, loving, and professional support. “If we can help more children, why not?” Ms. Roshanak says, her warmth reflecting the very essence of Wee Rays. And for parents, this vision is paired with an equally powerful reminder:
If your child is struggling developmentally, emotionally, or behaviourally, early help can change everything. You are not alone, and your child deserves a place where they feel safe, joyful, and understood. Wee Rays is a sanctuary where love meets expertise, progress is nurtured gently, and every child is embraced with open arms. Here’s the ray of hope that guides your child forward.
