Dear Parents

In this instalment of our Featured Article, we would like to introduce you to Kingsgate International School which is located in the Bukit Jalil area. Kingsgate is managed and operated by Global Services in Education (*GSE) which is one of the world’s leading education management teams with a global footprint of more than 20 schools across Australia, USA, China, the Middle East and now, Malaysia.

Kingsgate’s state-of-the-art facilities celebrate international education at its very best. Situated adjacent to Technology Park Malaysia, Kingsgate embraces an innovation philosophy reflecting the beliefs and values of Da Vinci. The curriculum delivered is a highly academic one that balances creative and scientific approaches. It is hands on, practical and engaging. The open, colourful and modern classrooms encourage multi-sensory learning and practical activities. The school even has its own Harvard inspired ‘Innovation Lab.’ Many describe the classrooms as the most beautifully designed classrooms in the region.

Mrs. Shanna Parry, the Education Director adds, “Each milestone and developmental stage of the learning journey will be recorded and tracked in a learning portfolio. We track real progress in terms of academics as well as character, values, social development and aptitude to future learning.”

Kingsgate offers Kindergarten to Year 13 programmes based on the International British Curriculum. Kingsgate believes that their students should be challenged as well as nurtured, guided and developed as independent learners. Kindergarten students follow the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum while Primary and Secondary students pursue the International British Curriculum which leads to IGCSE and A-Level. To further enhance the international learning experience, Kingsgate is accredited by the Cambridge International Accreditation where the curriculum delivered is reflected and guided by the highest international standards and expectations.

Pre-Nursery (Students under 3 years old)

Kingsgate has created a “home away from home” environment to encourage the children to grow in a safe and supportive space. The children develop at their own pace and the individual needs of every child is fostered and engaged. At this Pre-Nursery stage, the primary focus is to develop and support the children’s language and communication skills, their physical growth plus their social and emotional skills. Learning is supported through large and small group sessions with both planned and spontaneous child-initiated activities. However, learning is not confined to the four walls of the classroom and ongoing exploration is encouraged through additional outside designated learning/play areas. By the time the children are ready to move up to Nursery, they would have gained an understanding of their basic emotions, have greater physical control and are positively interacting and communicating with those around them.

Nursery and Reception (Students aged between 3 to 5 years old)

At this stage, children are taught logical reasoning, critical thinking and problem-solving strategies. Here activities are thematic and based around the children’s interests and needs. Through indoor and outdoor play, children become confident in their own learning, are able to take calculated risks, are effective communicators and can articulate their thoughts and feelings to others. Children are prepared for reading and writing by being exposed to Phonics plus reading and writing simple words. To understand simple Mathematical concepts, students are exposed to number symbols, shapes and patterns.

Activities across the age groups are:

  • Messy play-group, play dough, slime
  • Drama, puppets, role-play
  • Stories and book corner
  • Cooking
  • Counting, sorting, classifying
  • Sand and water
  • Painting, drawing, junk modelling
  • Sensory games
  • Ball games
  • Blocks and building
  • Field trips
  • Thematic activity tables
  • Listening centre
  • Small world play garage, zoo, train set
  • Outdoor play – see-saw, tricycles, bikes, pushing buggies, throwing, rolling and catching balls
  • Puzzles
  • Computer
  • Music and dance

Throughout the Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception years, the child’s progress and development is continually monitored through a portfolio approach to assessment. This programme monitors real samples of work to follow and record the key areas where children may need some extra help and support. At the end of the Reception year, teachers will provide an assessment that is known as the EYFS Profile based on what has been observed throughout the child’s time at Kingsgate.

Besides an outstanding Early Years Programme, Kingsgate also provides an excellent Primary School Curriculum which includes both homeroom teachers and an extensive range of specialist teachers to provide a holistic learning experience for all students. Specialist learning includes Physical Education, ICT, Library, Languages (Malay, English, Mandarin), Music, Art and Moral Studies.

When they enter Secondary School, a Kingsgate student will encounter a rigorous and highly-focused curriculum that also builds a breadth of life skills in preparation for their entry into the adult world.

All teaching staff at Kingsgate are highly qualified and dedicated expatriate professionals with impressive international school teaching expertise. These distinctly culturally-aware teachers bring with them the ‘Best of the Best’ teaching approach to share with the students and our community. They all hold recognized qualifications and are native English speakers from their home countries, such as the UK, USA, Australia and Canada. They are also firmly supported by Teaching Assistants who can communicate in multiple local languages.

The Kingsgate approach to leadership and management is also unique in regard to the levels of accessibility. Few schools in the region can boast direct access to the Senior Management Team as that which is offered by Kingsgate. “We conduct Director’s Round Table meetings every month so that parents can connect directly and speak about the school operations and management. We believe it is important for parents to participate in discussion about the strategic direction of the school as well as ask questions about day-to-day operations,” said Shanna Parry.

It is clear that Kingsgate International School is breaking conventions and will continue to set new standards for education in the region.
