Here at HiKaRi Education, there is time for little ones to play, laugh, sing, dance, climb, learn and grow! The atmosphere is homelike, and teachers strive to be worthy of truly good role models that are filled with gratitude, love and warmth. Together, they bring along 15 years of teaching experience with a specialisation in early childhood brain development, and a keen interest in promoting children’s learning within a supportive environment.

The programmes at HiKaRi Education have a specific emphasis on play-based learning and recognise the importance of early literacy and numeracy, intellectual, cognitive, social and emotional, and physical development. They take a holistic approach to children’s development to prepare them with the skills and competencies necessary for their next educational setting. The following programmes are designed exclusively for preschool age children, as well as children enrolled in the first few years of school:

1) Playschool (20 months and above)

Young children are provided with opportunities to engage in a wide variety of activities and learning experiences. Playschool provides a world where they can explore through creative play, and shape new understandings from hands-on activities. Children enjoy learning adventures like solving puzzles, building with blocks and having fun using their minds. These explorations instil a sense of curiosity and a solid love of lifelong learning.

At this stage of child development, early learning concepts are introduced through a thematic approach and integrated across different areas of learning: Language (English and Mandarin), Maths, Sensorial, Practical Life and Culture. In addition, children are introduced firsthand to the joys that reading can bring, helping them develop a motivation to read.

The playschool session is structured with predictable routines that provide young children with a sense of comfort and understanding of time management. The daily routine is as follows:

Daily Routine

8:30 a.m.       Arrival

9:00 a.m.       Welcome and Singing Time

9:10 a.m.       Lesson Time (English and Mandarin)

10:00 a.m.     Recess and Snack Time

10:30 a.m.     Playtime, Interactive Activities, Art and Craft, Role Play

11:00 a.m.     Story Telling, Flashcards, Self-Reflection

12:00 p.m.     Dismissal

Immersion in regular creative movement, early work with words and numbers, and collaborative play helps children develop strong knowledge to build deep conceptual understanding. Children will also establish social confidence and social/emotional capacities that they can take with them to big school.

2) Enrichment Classes (20 months and above)

The centre offers a good range of after-school enrichment programmes. Children can unwind, enjoy a nutritious meal, have fun with friends after school and expand their knowledge in the enrichment offerings listed below. This session is the perfect combination of continued learning and play opportunities.

  • Mandarin

Teachers adopt an interactive approach to strengthen children’s Mandarin skills in an engaging atmosphere. Active participation is encouraged to help children recognise Chinese characters, and develop the confidence to speak and skills to read and write.

  • English

Children are taught to improve and master English language skills through engaging texts and captivating activities. Classes combine all aspects of the language: deliver effective conversation skills, improve reading, strengthen listening comprehension, build vocabulary and construct grammatically correct sentences.

  • Maths

The curriculum correlate to local preschool standards and utilizes age-appropriate activities to teach children Math fundamentals. Basic concepts, such as numbers and quantities, are introduced and practiced to construct a more rounded Maths foundation.

  • Art

Classes provide ample avenues for children to nurture their creative potential and imagination. Children are guided to experiment using a myriad of art media including oil pastels, coloured pencils, watercolours and more.

3)     After School Programme (7 – 9 years old)

Tutors work with young primary school-aged children to provide the support and instruction that focuses on their academic needs. Tutoring sessions offer guidance on homework and assignments, and opportunities to extend children’s learning time outside the regular classroom day. The purpose is to provide a well-supervised environment for children in the community to gather to study, read and have fun with peers.

Teachers at HiKaRi Education promotes a culture of collaboration dedicated to give every child the opportunity to reach his or her full potential. The principles of their teaching practices, as well as open communication with parents, ensure children leave with the surety of self that will enable them to remain as strong, capable learners, with a passion for learning and wonder for the fast-changing world.
