About Us
We believe that early childhood is the foundation upon which children build the rest of their lives. To build this strong foundation and cultivate a love for lifelong learning, Eight Virtues ensures the centre is a home away from home with half, full and extended day programmes.
Eight Virtues was named after the guidelines for life proposed by the sage Confucius. Through their day-to-day activities and a series of creative and exciting lessons, children will learn about the importance of filial piety, brotherhood, loyalty, trust, etiquette, righteousness, integrity, and humility.
With low student-teacher ratios, the preschool follows the Montessori approach in its education of 1.5 to 6.5 years old. The classroom is a ‘living room’ for children, who can choose their studies from among the self-correcting materials displayed on open shelves. Over time, the children develop into a “normalized community,” working with high concentration and few interruptions. Normalization is the process whereby a child moves from being undisciplined to self-disciplined, from disordered to ordered, from distracted to focused. The process occurs though repeated work with materials that captivate the child’s attention. For some children this inner change may take place quite suddenly, leading to deep concentration.
The Curriculum Montessori core curriculum consists of five key areas:
- Practical Life Exercises: which instil care for self, for others, and for the environment
- Sensorial Education: which builds their cognitive skills and teaches kids to order and classify impressions by touching, seeing, smelling, tasting, listening, and exploring the physical properties of their environment
- Language and Arts: which includes oral language development, written expression, reading, the study of grammar, creative dramatics, and children’s literature
- Mathematics: which through physical activities enables the child to internalize concepts of number, symbol, sequence, operations, and memorization of basic facts
- Cultural Studies: which exposes the child to basics in geography, history, and life sciences
To further nurture your child, Eight Virtues offers additional studies in music, art, physical education, outdoor play, and Bahasa and Mandarin.
